Dumas, Emin, De Bruyckere, Smith, Bourgeois: Flaesh

Double-edged title of an exhibition centering on figural output of five eminent international female artists brings attention to the existential flash and the role of the human body (flesh) in contemporary art. The visual style of the exhibition – that as a whole could not be represented by any single piece of sixty exhibited sculptures, drawings, watercolors, pieces of embroidery and installations – builds on shared substance, ambiguous red-pink and a classic typeface infested with strange cartilaginous growths. Detail of material cut from one of Louise Bourgeois’ watercolor nudes, which serves as the title background, looks in good will as watermelon juice, or right as tissue and smeared body fluid.
