Briefcase, Reflex, The Drums & Hedi Slimane
Aleš Najbrt and Marek Pistora, both one-time art directors of the one-time cutting-edge Czech weekly Reflex, last year completed the digitization Reflex typeface. Najbrt’s typeface that was created for the logo and subheads of the magazine before the digital, received from Pistora small letters and a few fonts, and last week it became available under the auspices of Briefcase, a new independent type foundry by Tomáš Brousil and Radek Sidun. The sublabel of Brousil’s renowned Suitcase Type Foundry focuses on designers who don’t feel the need to set up their own foundries and their alphabets would otherwise stay in the drawer. Except for the founding fathers, Briefcase kicks off by offering twenty typefaces from nine Czech designers, representing some “important milestones in the evolution of Czech typography over the last twenty years”. Apart from Reflex, there’s also Najbrt’s font Thomas & Ruhller and Pistora’s Merkur and Vafle. In the meantime, our pet band The Drums crisscrosses America wearing the Reflext T-shirt in a diary of Hedi Slimane, the creative director of Saint Laurent Paris.
